Oh, LT5s, how do I love thee? The LT4 model poles are great for being the lightest available on the market, but when Gossamer Gear recently released the LT5, I swooned. These three part trekking poles collapse to just shy of 24 inches, making them a lot easier to stow away when they are not in use. Sure, you can find poles that fold down to even tinier proportions but none so elegant as the stripped down carbon fiber LT5. The locking mechanism on Gossamer Gear’s series of Lightrek poles is internal, so there are no fussy fixtures interrupting the simple design or getting caught on stuff or coming open when they shouldn’t. The straps (which are much more comfortable and more easily adjustable that the original LT4 straps) and baskets (for use in snow or rocky areas) are both removable, so you may shave even more weight off of these lovelies should you be so inclined, and if you snap a section by accident, Gossamer Gear will sell you a replacement section to restore your trekking poles. The length extends to 51 inches so that you’ve got plenty of leeway when you use them to set up your shelter. LT5s are an investment in your kit that you will not regret!
